Margaretta “Peggy” Calvert

Margaretta “Peggy” Calvert, daughter of Joseph and Lucretia Harrison, was born in Bryn Mawr, PA. She was raised in nearby Ardmore along with her two sisters and two brothers. Peggy attended the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr.

Peggy’s 41-year marriage to Jim Calvert was her second. (It was Jim’s second marriage too.) The two met late in 1967 while Jim was on home leave from the Mediterranean (where he commanded of the 6th Fleet). It had to be “love at first sight” because their long-distance courtship yielded decisively to the altar in less than 6 months when, in April 1968, Peggy flew to Greece and married her beloved Jim. Two months later, in something of a whirlwind, the two newly weds moved to Annapolis - Jim as the 43rd Superintendent at USNA (1968 – 1972), and Peggy as his talented and attractive “First Lady”.  It was Peggy’s introductory experience as a Navy wife.

Peggy complimented and assisted Jim personally and professionally in countless essential ways during and after his tenure at the Academy. To the moment of Jim's passing in June 2009, Peggy always made Jim proud. She was also Jim’s able “mate” at sea. For much of Jim's retirement they were never without a boat. They spent many happy summers sailing or motoring between their homes in St. Michaels, MD and Martha's Vineyard and other coastal destinations from Maine to Florida.

Each of Peggy and Jim produced children from a first marriage: Peggy had four sons and Jim had two sons and a daughter (the last of whom, Margaret, sadly is no longer living). There are fourteen grandchildren.

Peggy is an avid painter and continues to pursue this joy frequently.

Peggy Kimbo

Miss Peggy never met a midshipman or our families and friends without extending a warm greeting and her bewitching grin. “Hello Honey” went out effortlessly to everyone she met. For more than 40 years as the hostess at Little Campus Inn and Galway Bay on Maryland Avenue, Miss Peggy made us feel that we were at home away from home, so long as we behaved. We felt that she loved us all, and if, by rare exception, she didn’t, we never knew it. Born Ethelda Naomi, in her grandmother’s house on College Avenue, a whisper from The Wall and one block from Gate 3, her father was employed at the Academy laundry for 45 years. In a very real way, Miss Peggy has always been a bridge between the Academy and the historic town. She embodies all that Annapolis seeks to be. She is a modern day griot, ever ready to tell the stories that bring Annapolis to life through the eyes of one who lives and loves Annapolis.
